IFAC Major

Placement & Career Prospects

The career prospects after this Major are very broad: external or internal auditing, financial management, group reporting, financial analysis, chartered accounting, controlling, financial advisory services, management consulting, strategy consulting, banking, and more…

The class of 2013, for example, found employment in the following sectors:

Employment in auditing should be understood in the broadest sense.

Several Big Four Professional firms (Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG, Price Waterhouse Coopers) have developped "graduate programs" that enable their new recruits to gain successive experience in their different divisions: auditing, transaction services, advisory, over a cycle of two years. This enables the young graduates to confirm their preferences and decide later about their future career.

External auditing must also be distingued from internal auditing. External auditing experience trains the Junior auditors on how to certify the companies financial accounts, with specific audit methodologies. At the opposite, intenal auditing, which is done in a manufacturing or services company, is an opportunity to better unederstand a large group from the inside and to discover various branches and divisions of the same firm. Internal auditing jobs can range from internal controls, or financial audits to business, operational, even strategic topics.

Moreover, the Big 4 have expanded significantly in recent years in terms of both quantity (increase in business) and quality, with greater value added in their engagements, especially as regards risk mitigation and performance improvement. Working in these firms can be a stepping stone to a wide range of jobs extending well beyond accounting: financial communication, consulting, financial engineering, e-business, tax and legal expertise, support for business start-ups and company takeovers, development and control of the management system, introduction of internal control, etc.

For students who have not yet decided on a specific career, the Corporate Financial Management (IFAC) Major, with its combined focus on technical expertise and organisational and strategic issues, offers an excellent preparation for business life. It will give them greatly-appreciated skills while leaving all options open for the future.
